Nice Bomb, shame about the.....

Nice wee job appearing today in the Saturday Times. Illustrating a short story by Terry Jones (of Monty Python fame) about a bomb that drops into a family house. The bomb is a 'nice bomb' though and proceeds to help the family with the housework and in general in their lives. 'Nice' until one christmas when the bomb apologises to the family and......

GOLD!

Delighted to announce that I won an editorial gold award at the Association of Illustrators 'Images 35' awards last thursday. I won the prize for my 'Sawney Skull' illustration for BBC History Magazine. The image is part of the Images 35 exhibition starting now at the Bankside Gallery in London and touring the country.

p.s. the head of design at the Times who presented the award is on a stage. I'm small but not that small!

Some roughs just seem to work sometimes. Not in the fact that they are approved and are used - just in that some have a nice feel to them. I liked the rough for this job but I was very pleased with the final too.
This one was to show 'Benefit of Clergy' where people were cleared of the death sentence by claiming they were members of the church. They were given more lenient sentences but were branded by the local hangman with a letter so they could only claim this 'benefit' once.

I resisted going ahead with this idea to show the battle between Mary Tudor and Cromwell. Thought the boxing/wrestling spoof poster might be a bit naff - but it seemed to work in the end!

Blighty Wound

Soldiers in the WW2 trenches sometimes wished for a 'blighty wound'. A wound that was serious enough to be sent home to 'blighty'

Version 1 was the original which was deemed to be too offensive to older readers. Version 2 was redone to be muddy not bloody!
